Above and below is a closer look at the work shown at the Diverse Gatherings exhibition in No Format gallery SE London. A mixed media installation combining instant film and lighting with an audio background noise. the wires were shown as part of the artwork.
The power supplies to the lights each give off a high pitched sound which, in unison, gives a background industrial noise to the installation and is quite disconcerting and helps to dislocate you from the real world when viewing the pictures. My images are dark in tone thematically so this adds to the viewing experience, the wires also gives a biological association with memory as if veins or neurons.
The lights are the kind used in advertising and information technology, this puts the artwork in context of our daily interaction and instructions from screens, lights, panels and displays. Are we in control of them, or are they in control of us? The display format also conveys a scientific quality which is an influence in my work.
The images are made using my slr 680 and instant film made by Impossible. They are made into transparencies and layered and combined with double exposures to make composite transparencies. This organic quality is something I wish to explore further in different future installation pieces combined with moving image and sound.
